The Land of Castles
How does the saying go, "I'm not in Kansas anymore"? Well I am definitely not in Ohio anymore. Driving down the M4 motorway I noticed the beautiful mountains that were just covered in sheep. Of course typical UK weather was in play and was raining on our first journey to our new home. The scenery was nonetheless breathtaking. When we drove into our new city and drove down the infamous Station Road, there was the local Pizza Hut. Oh it was not in a typical building but instead was in a building resembling a castle. You don't see that in Ohio.
Castles were everywhere. I mean everywhere. On one of our many drives, there was this mass of stones and I asked my husband what it was. He nonchalantly said "oh its a castle". I was in awe and couldn't believe that I was so close to a castle. Not realizing it my husband pulled over and got out. To me I was thinking, "we can actually walk through a castle?" This was all so new to me and I loved it. I love the history of these castles we would go see, and knowing that I was able to walk through them felt as if I touched history. Silly, I know but those days and moments will remain so precious to me.
On one of our "castle hunting" trips we were driving towards Oxwich Beach and seen a castle off the side of the road and my husband does what he normally does and drives right on the property to take a closer look. Well on this occasion it was not a public castle, in fact it was a private home. Talk about an embarrassing moment. The owners were inside watching us probably wondering what the heck we were doing as we were trying to reverse off the property, realizing our mistake. It was one of those cover face/crouch down in seat; embarrassed. We did laugh about it later and of course got a few photos.
There is something about castles that is so magical, maybe its the memories of what these castles hold that is so captivating.
